I told you earlier that Rihanna traveled to her native Barbados last night to spend the holidays with her loved ones. Rihanna and her BFF Melissa Forde wasted no time reestablishing their routine of spending every waking moment together.

Remember I told you that Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend, Matt Kemp, and Melissa didn’t get along? Well, now that he’s out of the picture, Mel is back in her life full time.

The girlfriends attended a house party together in the early morning hours today.

It won’t be long before we start seeing pictures like this one again.

Sir David Frost Interviews Julian Assange Upon Release from Jail

Let me preface things by saying this will likely be our last WikiLeaks post for a while. Don’t want to slip into WikiLeaks overkill. With that said…

Yesterday, Sir David Frost landed the first television interview with Julian Assange since his release from a London jail. The 24 minute interview aired on Al Jazeera English (where Frost hosts a show called Frost Over the World) and pretty quickly they dive into some important questions: Do governments have the right to keep state secrets? And do media organizations have the right to divulge such secrets? Assuming so, where (if anywhere) must journalists draw the line? Why has WikiLeaks recently taken aim at the United States? Is it fair to characterize WikiLeaks as an anarchic organization? The list of questions goes on, including ones delving into Assange’s legal problems. I was going to title this post ‘More Horrible Music from Willow Smith,’ but you guys already label me a hater and ask why I’m so hard on the 10-year-old. I have reason to be.

Every time I get in my car and turn on the radio, Willow’s annoying single “Whip My Hair” assaults my eardrums. But relief is on the horizon:

Here’s the snippet of Willow’s new track “Rock Star”. Thankfully, this new song is bad (and I don’t mean good), so I won’t hear it on the radio any time soon.

Fantasmagorie: The First Animated Film

Today, we’re adding to our collection of Free Online Movies a great little film by Emile Cohl, otherwise known as “The Father of the Animated Cartoon.” Made in 1908, Fantasmagorie stitched together 700 drawings, each double-exposed, creating the first fully animated film. Cohl made over?250 films between 1908 and 1923, of which 37 survive in film archives. And several –?Le cauchemar de Fantoche (1908) and?The Hasher’s Delirium (1910) – appear right here on YouTube.

Sometimes good gossip just drops into my lap when I least expect it.

The other day I told you that my jeweler let it slip out that ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ cast member Sheree Whitfield paid $32,000 for a 18k gold Rolex Presidential watch (the one she’s wearing in the pic above, dated December 10).

Well, the other night I happened to be in another jewelry store at Lenox Mall looking at watches, when the talkative salesman told me that Whitfield came into his store and purchased a diamond encrusted Cartier wristwatch for $35,000.

It turns out that both watch purchases were made on the same day. And get this: she paid cash.

Sheree has the whole mall talking about how she’s walking around dropping cash like a broken ATM machine. I thought only dope boys did that?

Where is Sheree getting all that loot from when she can’t even pay her bills on time? Wouldn’t a prudent adult put her money in the bank or invest it?

In a recent Vanity Fair magazine interview Rhianna mentioned that The Louis Stewart Collection is her favorite accessory line on the planet!! Awesome!

F. Scott Fitzgerald Recites “Ode to a Nightingale”

70 years ago today, F. Scott Fitzgerald died an untimely death, his life cut short by alcoholism, tuberculosis, and eventually a series of heart attacks. He was only 44 years old. Today, we remember Fitzgerald with some vintage audio – the author of The Great Gatsby reciting John Keats’ “Ode to a Nightingale” from memory. (Listen here or here.) Fitzgerald deviates several times from the text before going completely off the rails. And then the poem, a meditation on mortality and the transience of beauty, cuts off abruptly halfway through. A rather fitting metaphor for Fitzgerald’s own life.

According to Park Bucker, an associate professor of English at the University of South Carolina, the recording was likely made around 1940, during Fitzgerald’s last year, perhaps in a self-recording phonograph booth in Southern California. When Fitzgerald died, he was living in Los Angeles, a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter, hoping to write one last great novel. In her Paris Review interview, Dorothy Parker described Fitzgerald’s bleak last days: “It was terrible about Scott; if you’d seen him you’d have been sick. When he died no one went to the funeral, not a single soul came, or even sent a flower. I said, ‘Poor son of a bitch,’ a quote right out of The Great Gatsby, and everyone thought it was another wisecrack. But it was said in dead seriousness.”

Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse in Time Lapse Video

The Vimeo Video School

You all know and love Vimeo videos. (We’ve featured many here before.) Now Vimeo will teach you how to make your own videos. The new Vimeo Video School includes some nuts-and-bolts lessons (i.e., how to capture good sound or improve your framing & composition). And then there are some extra tutorials created by members of the Vimeo community. Above, we give you a short introduction to storyboarding (part of a larger series on the subject), which happens to feature original drawings from Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. And yes, by the way, American viewers can watch Taxi Driver online (for free) right here.

Chris Landreth turned to animation as a second career and eventually landed an Oscar with Ryan (2004), a short animated film based on the life of Ryan Larkin, an artist who produced influential animated films during the 1960s, before falling into a personal downward spiral.?You can revisit two of Larkin’s animated films (both referenced in the film above) on NFB.CA. Start with the Oscar-nominated short, Walking, from 1969, and then turn to?Street Musique (1972). And don’t forget to download?NFB’s free iPad app where you can watch Ryan in a portable yet visually compelling format.

Singer Jamie Foxx seemed lost in thought as he stared out of a window in the offices of Power 99 radio in Philly on Friday. Foxx joined host Shamara (not pictured) for a live broadcast via Ustream to promote his new album Best Night of My Life, which is available in stores December 21st.

Justin Bieber’s camp is working overtime to dead the gay rumors that have recently sprung up about him. Yesterday Justin, 16, was seen cavorting with 18-year-old actress Selena Gomez aboard his tour bus in Miami, Florida. Justin had just finished showering after playing a concert and playing basketball at the American Airlines Arena. Justin is seen carrying a plastic bag containing Pantene Shampoo and Proactiv skin care products for his chronic acne.

This pic supposedly shows the lovebirds locked in a warm embrace on board the tour bus — in full view of the paparazzi.

Earlier that day, Selena and Justin were spotted walking together and holding hands outside his hotel in Miami Beach. The BFFs separated and ran away after making sure the paps got all the shots they needed of them together, of course.

Tameka “Tiny” Harris Sister 2 Sister Magazine Photo Shoot

That is the most atrocious photoshop job I’ve seen in a long time. Oh my damn! I hate when they remix someone so much that they’re barely recognizable. Tiny’s not an ugly chick, but for “entertainment’s sake” she should have gotten a “touch up” and not necessarily a complete overhaul.

These pictures make her look like a cartoon character. Not a good look. This type of work is exactly what makes entertainers end up getting work. They put $hit like this out and then when people see them and they don’t live up to the characature they’ve put out, people let them know and they run to the chop shop.

A little goes a long way.

Google Visualizes Words & Culture

Since 2004, Google has digitized more than 15 million books, mostly to build its?Google Books service. But?yesterday Google Labs released a nice little spinoff product, the Ngram Viewer, that provides a window into?how we have historically used words, and what these usages say about our culture.

This new visualization tool lets you map out the usage of a given word, or series of words, over a 200 year period (1800 – 2008). For example, the Ngram Viewer shows us that we think less about ?“war” these days, as compared to?the 1940s and 1960s, and more about “terrorism.” (Click the links to “war” and “terrorism” and you will see what I mean.) Similarly, the English speaking world has recently renewed its love affair with the dog vis-a-vis cats. And if you invested in salsa and bailed on ketchup in 1980, you would be a pretty wealthy person right now.

Overall, the Ngram database contains roughly?5.2 million books (a subset of the larger Google Books database), with?some 500 billion words, and it?features texts in Chinese, English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. Get more details here.

WikiRebels: New Documentary Tells the WikiLeaks‎ Story

Earlier this week, Sweden’s public television service, SVT (akin to PBS and the BBC), released a one hour documentary chronicling the history of WikiLeaks, starting with its early leaks of Scientology documents and ending with its recent release of American diplomatic cables. Since July, SVT reporters have followed WikiLeaks, traveling near and far to interview WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and other top members of the whistleblowing organization, some of who have since left the embattled internet site. All in all, a decent introduction to Wikileaks and its controversial mission. Thanks to @eacion for the heads up…

R&B singer Keyshia Cole was a guest on V-103’s ‘The Ryan Cameron Show’ yesterday in Atlanta. She addressed the ongoing issues between herself and her mom, Frankie, and why she still has not been able to fix the relationship with her family.
